1. How do I access Blackboard?

Blackboard is accessed through http://gateway.slu.edu and uses SLU's integrated sign on.
You will need your SLUnet ID and password to get into mySLU (formerly Gateway). From there, click on the Tools tab and then the Blackboard Learning System link.

2. Do I have to request a new course every semester?

Yes, you have to fill out this form every semester, even if it's been taught before. You can move the content from your old section by yourself. The instructions for that are here.

Back to Top

3. How do I request a course in Blackboard?

You need to fill out this form. Please note that we no longer create courses manually and that it is a longer process than with WebCT. Courses have to be flagged in Banner by the Registrar's office and that can take up to 24 hours.

Back to Top

4. Is training available for Blackboard CE?

Yes. Kim Scharringhausen is offering many training sessions for Blackboard this fall. Check the training schedule for times and dates.

Back to Top

5. How do I move content from one semester to the next or from a development course to a live course?

The first time you open your new 'live' course (a course that was created in Banner as opposed to one that was created manually by the Blackboard CE team) you will see several options. (See below).

Choose the second option. You will then be able to navigate to the section you want to copy and import it to the new one. If you choose the first option by mistake, call the Blackboard team at 977-2252 or webct@slu.edu and they will assist with moving your content.

6. Can I use the old WebCT icons in my course?

Yes, but you have to upload them manually. The icon files are included in a zip file that you can download here. You then have to upload them to the "my Files" section of Blackboard and unzip them there. From there you can use them in your class.

Back to Top

7. How can I delete a student from the Grade Book in Blackboard CE?

You can't delete them, but you can enenroll them from the class and choose the option to hide unenrolled students. The students won't see the course in myBlackboard and they won't be shown in your grade book.

Back to Top

8. How do I grant or deny access to my students in a Blackboard section?
  1. Log into Blackboard.
  2. Click on the course you wish to work on from your Course List.
  3. From the Build Tab, click on Manage Course in Designer Tools.

  4. Click on the Settings link.

  5. In the Administration column click on the Learning Context Link.

  6. You will see a drop-down menu. You have several choices here. If you do nothing and choose "Use term setting" the class will be available to students.

    At the term level the classes are available to students, designers and instructors at all times. If you don't want students to access the course, you have to set your course to Never Available (see below) at the section level. If you want to give access back to students, choose "Use term setting."

  7. Always available: This setting will allow students to always access the section, regardless of the settings at the term level.
  8. Never available: This setting will allow students to never access the section, regardless of the settings at the term level.
  9. There are other choices which we are not implementing at this time.

9. Why can't I change the title of a link to a file? I updated the title in "Edit Properties" from the Action Link and clicked "Save" but it didn't update.

This is counterintuitive. You need to choose "Customize Link" from the Action Link, not Edit Properties. Note: this only works for links to files. Folder titles are edited in "Edit Properties."

10. I just want to add a file to my class. How do I do that?

Under the Build tab (as section instructor) there is a button right on your Home Page that says Add File.

Click the link and select Browse for Files. From there you select My Computer and browse for the file you want from your computer.

The file you select will be added to your page. You can change the link for the file by clicking the action link next to it and selecting Customize link.

Back to Top

11. I've heard that I can't put Windows Media video files on Blackboard. Is there a workaround for that?

Not at this time. The WMP player is not happy in a secure environment such as Blackboard CE. We've found that MPEG 1 files will work but only using the Firefox browser. Internet Explorer doesn't like them.

Having said that, we don't want Bb to be used as a video server since we don't have the storage capacity. If you have video longer than a couple of minutes, you need to store it on an external server and linked to your course in Blackboard.

12. When I get to Blackboard from Gateway, it gives me another log in screen. What is my username and password?

You don't actually have one. It's supposed to take you directly to myBlackboard. If it doesn't it is a browser issue. Blackboard is very picky about this. Make sure you have the current version of Java installed.

If nothing seems to work with Internet Explorer, we recommend that you try using Firefox. Sometimes it works better with Blackboard.

If you've installed Firefox and you are still getting a log-in screen, try one more thing.
Go to the Tools menu and select Options. Click the Advanced tab. Uncheck the box that says use SSL 3.0.

Back to Top

13. I've added links in my course but they don't show up? What's going on?

Make sure you don't have any unusual characters in your title. Blackboard doesn't like the number signs or other non text characters.

Back to Top

14. When I click on my Grade Book under the Teach tab, I get a blank screen. What can I do about this?

According to Blackboard support, you need to clear your cache and cookies. Each browser is different, so here are instructions for several popular web browsers.

Internet Explorer 6
Internet Explorer 7
Firefox (PC)
Firefox(Mac)
Safari (Mac)

15. How do I edit my course headers in Blackboard?

Note: If you used headers for announcements in WebCT, we recommend that you not do so in Blackboard. The Announcement Tool is the best way to highlight news and information in Blackboard.

BBCE uses html code for the headers. Click on your Page Options action link icon next to the right of your header. Then select "Edit Header" from the drop down list. For a simple header with a dark blue background, copy and paste this code into the html editor and replace the generic text with your own information.

<table width="800" align= "center">
<tr>
<td bgcolor="#336699" align="center">
<strong><span style="font-size:16pt; color:#FFFFFF">

Your course number (AAA_123) goes here.
<br><br>
Your course title goes here.
<br><br>
Your name goes here.
</span>
</strong>
</td>
</tr>
</table>

If you want italics, put this tag immediately before your text <i> and this one immediately after your text </i>.

16. How can I add a designer, an instructor or a TA to a course?

Call (977-2252) or email the Blackboard team and we will be happy to add those users for you.

Back to Top

17. What happens to the class enrollment after the semester ends?

Classes stay on Blackboard with their enrollment until the old classes are deleted. We plan on keeping them for one year. If you don't want students to see old courses, you can deny access. Instructions on how to do that are in FAQ number 9 above.

Back to Top
18. Should I back up my course? How do I do it?

You should definitely back up your course! Here's how. From the Design tab, click on Manage Course. Then click on the Backups link.

From there, click on the Back Up Course button to create an retrievable archive of your course.

Back to Top

19. What happened to my Administration tab?

This is a change we have made to correct an issue that could lead to accidental deletion of courses from the server. If you need assistance with adding section designers, section instructors or TAs, call the Blackboard team at 977-2252 or email us here.

22. How do I reorder items in my tool pages?

From the Build tab, click on the tool (Assessment, Discussion, etc.) that you want to rearrange. From there, select the item that you wish to move by placing a check in the box.

faq23 1

Now, click the little yellow icon next to the number where you want it to go. This is somewhat counterintuitive. For example, in the image above, we want to move the Teacher Evaluation from number 3 to number 1. We'll click on the move icon next to number 1 after checking the box on number 3.

Now select "Move Selected Above."

faq23 2

The Teacher Evaluation is now in the first spot and the other items have been moved down.

24. Is there a way that I can get a guest account for a visiting professor or lecturer?

There is. If you call ITS customer support at 977-4000 they will send you a form to fill out for a temporary SLU user ID. When the account is created we can set up a guest account in Blackboard CE.

25. I have videos on the Classroom Video server but they don't work consistently.
What should I do?

ITS has moved to a new video service that can host your videos offsite. To get your files moved or to convert videos to the proper format, contact Jonathan Grimm (grimmje@slu.edu or 977-2923). Jonathan will send you new links for your course. If you have any difficulty adding the links, the Blackboard team can assist you. Call 977-2252 or email webct@slu.edu, For instructions on adding the video links to your class, see FAQ #28.

26. I am using Firefox 3. When I try to log into Blackboard from mySLU, I am taken to another log-in screen and I'm not allowed to log-in. What's going on?

Firefox 3 is not yet supported by mySLU or by Blackboard CE. If you click "Check Browser" on the upper right side of your myBlackboard page, you will be notified of this. You can either downgrade to Firefox 2 or use another browser such as Internet Explorer on the PC or Safari on the Mac.

27. I created an assigment and want to look at it in Student View but I get an system exception error." Why is this happening?

If student access has been turned off (see FAQ #8) you will get this error when trying to view assigments (and other tools) in Student View. The demo student is subject to the rules allowing student access, just like regular students.

28. Is Classroom Video still available? If so, how can I add movie links to my Blackboard pages?

ITS has implemented Classroom Video v.2 which is replacing the original Classroom Video service. Your movies can be digitized and uploaded by Jonathan Grimm (grimmje@slu.edu). When your video is ready, Jonathan will send you a link for embedding into a Blackboard page.

Adding Video Links to your Blackboard Course

Note: you will need to do this for each video you want to link to. Multiple links will not
work with this method.

Step 1. From your course's home page (make sure you're on the Build tab) c
lick on Add Folder.
Name the folder Video Links or something similar and click Save.

folder

Step 2. Go back to your home page and click on your new video folder.

Now we'll create files that contain the actual video.

Step 3. Click on Add File and select Create File.

Step 4. When the next window pops up, put the film's title in the Title area. (see image below)

Step 5. In the content area, paste the long link that Jonathan sent you.

Step 6. Make sure the Use HTML box is checked.

Step 7. Click Save.

Step 8. Repeat steps 3 through 7 to add more film links to your video folder.

29. When I try to upload files, I get a red x where 'My Computer' is supposed to be. What can I do about this?

This is a Java problem. Java is a program that works in the background of Blackboard to do certain things and 'My Computer' is one of them.

Try clicking 'Check Browser' in the upper right part of your myBlackboard page. Scroll down and see if there is a red X on the Java section. This indicates a problem with your Java installation.

If this is happening on an office computer, call 977-4000 and ask them to update and enable Java. If it's your personal computer, you can go to http://www.java.com to download the latest version.

Instructions for enabling Java:

Internet Explorer for PC

* Click "Tools" --> "Internet Options"
* Select the Advanced Tab, and scroll down to "Java (Sun)" or to "Microsoft VM"

* Next, select the Security Tab, and select the "Custom Level" button
* Scroll down to "Scripting of Java applets"
* Make sure the "Enable" radio button is checked.
* In the section marked "Microsoft VM", if it exists, make sure that "Disable Java" is NOT selected. If it is selected, deselect it by selecting "High Safety".
* Click OK to save your preference.

Note: if you did not see "Java (Sun)" or "Microsoft VM" listed in the choices under the Advanced tab in your Internet Options, you will need to download and install Java on your computer.

Internet Explorer for Mac

* Choose "Explorer" from the top file menu, then choose "Preferences".
* Under "Web Browser" in the left-side pane, click "Java".
* Under "Java Options" on the right-side, make sure that "Enable Java" is checked.
* Click "OK".

Firefox for PC

* Choose "Tools" and then "Options.." form the top menu.
* From the left-side panel, choose "Web Features".
* Under "Web Features" on the right-side panel, make sure that the box next to 'Enable Java' is checked.
